Russia’s Supreme Court effectively outlaws LGBTQ+ activism in a landmark ruling

Russian Supreme Court judge Oleg Nefedov leads a hearing in the Russian Supreme Court in Moscow, Russia, Thursday, Nov. 30, 2023. Russia's Supreme Court on Thursday effectively outlawed LGBTQ+ activism, the most drastic step against advocates of gay, lesbian and transgender rights in the increasingly conservative country. The court sided with the Justice Ministry, which filed a lawsuit this month demanding an LGBTQ+ "movement" in Russia to be labeled extremist. The Supreme Court of Russia essentially banned LGBTQ+ activism on Thursday, marking the sharpest move yet against supporters of LGBT rights in the nation's increasingly conservative society.

In a decision made in response to a lawsuit brought by the Ministry of Justice, the court prohibited the so-called LGBTQ+ "movement" in Russia and classified it as an extremist group.

Vladimir Putin, who has focused on "traditional family values" during his 24 years in office, has been cracking down on LGBTQ+ rights in Russia for the past ten years. The ruling is the most recent development in this campaign.

My opinion: This is wrong in any degree. I hate that not all countries have the freedom of protest. These people have a right to be who they are and now due to strict government beliefs, they have to hide. Not only hide, but they are not allowed to say a word about it. Protesters are being arrested on the spot. As world is trying to make more steps towards equality some minorities still get silenced and ignored.
